Patches Thursday February 21 | Daywanderer
Armpatches, that is. RSE Software Engineer Greg Stelmack recently hinted at a possible integration of the sought-after armpatch feature that went AWOL in the transition. This is what he said in reply to a post on the subject over at alt.games.ghost-recon:

"We're aware of it. Much of the time spent on Ghost Recon was getting the engine rearchitecture out of the way. Now that that's done you'll be seeing more and more of these little features working their way in (the patch showed some of it, and the mission pack will show even more)."

Desert Siege Movie! Tuesday February 19 | Rocky
Peacemaker has grabbed the first Desert Siege movie and it's available for download at R6/GR Universe right now. Bad news for dial-up users is that it is a huge file - just over 40Mb. The movie is 352x288 and 8 minutes long, and is taken from the Giga preview we mentioned earlier today. Grab it from this download page, and remember you'll need the Div-X codec to view it. Post your opinions in this discussion.

Must have Mods Friday February 15 | Rocky
It's going to be a great weekend for mods! Two days ago we posted news about Nishi's Team Rainbow 2 mod, but there were a few installation issues. Since then Nishi has corrected the problems and the download has been updated. This is great news as this is a superb and very detailed mod that brings Team Rainbow into the Ghost Recon arena! Moby has spent some time play testing it, read his thoughts over at The Platoon. Spray has also posted his thoughts in our Forum, along with an idea for making the unifrom selection easier.

Secondly, Jedi plans on releasing the Beta of the Navy Seals mod this weekend! This much anticipated mod has a huge feature list including over 45 rifleman kits, 27 sniper kits, 25 demo kits, 8 support kits, new loading screens, new missions, new reticules, new skins and new specialists from several countries. By all accounts the new weapons from Piccolo are going to be worth the wait. We'll be announcing the 8Mb download here sometime soon!

One Shot Success Thursday February 14 | Rocky
Spray has posted a cool replay of how easy it can be to complete the camp objective in Mission 1. It's a tiny 15Kb file, grab it from this discussion and see how the experts go about their business!

Pay Per View Wednesday February 13 | Rocky
I found two e-mails that IGN received to be very entertaining today. One is titled "All About the Money", the following e-mail is called "Who Dares Earn Money?" and they both deal with IGNs subscription service Insider.

The interesting thing (apart from IGN's correct but quite vicious reply) is that some people do still think the world wide web and its content is free, unfortunately this is far from the truth, and that is why we now have a banner ad on selected pages - to try and keep us online. If you are a regular here (and there are thousands of you), take a minute and read why we had to start showing adverts, and understand why IGN need a subscription service.

NMM Team 2 Wednesday February 13 | Rocky
Nishi has released NMM Gunworks Team 2 mod, which weighs in at a massive 27Mb.  I don't have much in the way of details as yet, but if you have a fast connection and you like Nishi's mods, you can grab it here.

Please note that Munkey and Moby at Platoon have tested this mod and although it has some cool features he warns that it has some installation issues to be wary of. In particular it overwrites some files and there is a problem with file extensions too. Platoon have mailed the author and will probably have an update soon.

Mission Pack Screenshots Tuesday February 12 | Jester
Check out the four new screenshots from the expansion pack over at GhostRecon.com.

Firestar's mod that switches Ghost Recon's night maps into daytime maps has racked up well over 3000 downloads already, and it just got better! Using a new tool from Mike Schell, Firestar has managed to correct the dark trees and enemies that spoiled the daytime effect in his mod. If you already have the original Night to Day mod, go grab the patch from here right now!

Guns, Lots of Guns Sunday February 10 | Daywanderer
It was a dark and quiet night, wind blowing, cats playing in the backyard, nothing to do - you know what it's like. So what did I do? Why, I wrote a small "guide"-ish thing on the Ghost Recon weapons of course! Ever found yourself wondering what makes one weapon better than another, exactly how good the weapons are or, most importantly, which ones you should pick for which jobs? Well wonder no more, scoot over here for some neatly organized thoughts on the Ghost Recon armoury.

Did I mess up? Get something wrong? Leave something out? Feel free to let me know!

Note that their server seems a little slow today, try back later if you can't access it today.

Pain's Ghosts Sunday February 10 | Rocky

Combining Mods Saturday February 09 | Rocky
If you have ever tried playing with two weapon mods activated at the same time you may have noticed a small problem with a "!Find_key" error. Yoda has prepared a report that identifies the cause, and provides a solution. If you have more than one weapon mod installed check it out.

GR Movie Saturday February 09 | Rocky
I just saw this posted at GR.com forums and had to share it with you, it's a new movie from ODS clan. ODS made a great RS movie a while back, and now they have produced a very professional Ghost Recon movie. If Ubi Soft had produced something similar at launch it would have been awesome. I can imagine the feedback - ".. and this is in-game footage?!!"

Grab it from the ODS movie page where they even detail how it was made, then watch the movie and be inspired to make you own "Ghost Recon - The Movie"!

Pain's Ghosts Saturday February 09 | Rocky
Pain @war is on the verge of releasing his awesome weapon mod - Pain's Ghosts. This mod will feature 27 weapons (all new models), 151 kits and a surprise extra weapon - and still weighs in at a 56K modem friendly size. Check out these images and watch this space for download news soon!

Sniper Update Friday February 08 | Rocky
Hooker has updated his popular Sniper Patrol with a small patch. The patch now allows the use of the 3 new secondaries with every rifle...a total of 55 kits all with correct kit icons, has increased the number of clips to balance gameplay, and fixed a problem with the torso kill-ratio.

Hooker's mod is getting some good feedback right now, like this comment from Car54 in our forums.

"I vote that yours is among the very best. I've had a blast playing your mod since its release, now I can take full advantage of the firepower. This weekend is looking up!"

If you have not tried playing mods on Ghost Recon yet - this might be a good place to start!

Patch Likes Thursday February 07 | Rocky
Spray has posted a summary of some of the enhancements that the patch has made to Ghost Recon. It's an interesting read - check it out here.

=DRAG= Mod Thursday February 07 | Rocky
Raven has released =DRAG=  v1.0 which has 24 new weapons 5 new skins and 3 special weapons like a 60mm Mortar a M2HB MG and 2 shotguns. There are some images and details in our forums. Download from here.

Patch Version Numbers Thursday February 07 | Rocky
Many fans are confused by the patch version numbers, as some sites (including the official one) were showing a v1.1.1.0 for download. I can now confirm that this was simply a typo, and the correct version is 1.1.5.0.

Ghost Recon Awards Thursday February 07 | Rocky
The 5th Annual Interactive Achievements Awards have listed Ghost Recon in two categories. In the Online Game Play of the Year award GR is up against Aliens vs. Predator 2, MechWarrior 4: Black Knight, Monopoly Tycoon and Return to Castle Wolfenstein. In the Outstanding Achievement in Sound Design category the competition is from PS2 titles Frequency, ICO and Metal Gear Solid 2.

After reading PC Gamer say this about Ghost Recon's Sound - I'd say another award is on the cards for sure!

"As you strain to hear the soft crunching of an enemy's footfalls through the steady splatter of pouring rain on a tin roof, you'll know you're listening to a new benchmark in game audio.  Ghost Recon is replete with astonishing sound design."

Gamerz.ws Wednesday February 06 | Rocky
Wow you guys are hungry for that patch - it feels like the whole internet just slowed down! First to suffer from server overload due to Patch Downloads is Gamerz.ws. They'll be offline for about 12 hours, so do not try to download the patch from them in the meantime, thanks.

Mission Pack Shots Wednesday February 06 | Rocky
While you are waiting for the patch to download, here are some new Mission Pack shots to look over...

English Patch is good to go! Wednesday February 06 | Rocky
At last - confirmation! This news from Joe Sauder Software Engineer, RSE in the official forums.

"Those of you who have downloaded the English patch from a European website should be okay, as long as you are patching a US or UK version of the game. The English patch covers both versions."

What does that mean? It means you can go ahead and download the Patch from any of the mirrors listed on the right. I'll be updating that list over the next few hours.

English Patch Wednesday February 06 | Rocky
Our Patch Download list on the right has a few English Patches now, gamers should note that they are all taken from the French site, and until Ubi Soft clarify what is going on, you download it at your own risk.

Patch Latest Wednesday February 06 | Rocky
Greg Stelmack of RSE has posted regarding the Patch situation - here's what he had to say.

"Many of the branch offices of UbiSoft are experience major network problems at the router level. This has delayed getting the Ghost Recon patch out to the various ubisoft.com web sites and the mirror sites and the posting of news to the main web page. We are working diligently to get this problem corrected but it will take time. Our customers should expect a world-wide release of the Ghost Recon patch, including localized versions for the various supported languages, by the evening of Thursday, February 7, 2002."

That helps explain the delay. Some gamers managed to grab an English patch from the official French site an hour ago, although it is entirely possible that they may have an out of date patch, or there may even be more than one "English" version. Wait for the Official word guys!

Exclusive - Patch is out.... Wednesday February 06 | Rocky
.... for the French and German! You can also download the English version from the French site, they just have not advertised it. I am not sure why it is not available on the English speaking Official site yet, so if you do grab it from the French site, it is at your own risk!

Update : The exact address for the download has been posted in the Official Forums, I am still unsure how "official" this is though. The English patch at the French site patches GR to v1.1.5.0 dated 1/18/2002 at 9:04, which may or may not be the latest version. We know that there were last minute problems with the patch, so I would suggest waiting for the official announcement before downloading anything!

Desert Caves Mod Wednesday February 06 | Rocky
Mike Schell has just released his Treeless Map 01, "Desert Caves". You can see what a difference this makes to the map in his announcement in our Mods Forum, where he has posted an image and some details, or grab it right now here.

Jester recently interviewed Mike Schell, so if you'd like to know more about the modding guru responsible for this mod, and some great modding tools, you can read it here!

Awards and Patch Tuesday February 05 | Rocky
Congratulations to the RSE team for their latest award. PC Gamer has just named Ghost Recon Game of the Year. Considering some of the other quality games that were aiming for that award it's a great pat on the back for Red Storm.

On the patch - Ubi Soft have been in touch to say it is ready to go and final preparations are taking place. Expect to see a list of download locations right here very soon.

Sniper Patrol Tuesday February 05 | Rocky
Hooker has just completed his Sniper Patrol mod - and it is going to be very popular with sniper fans. Included in the mod are 6 new sniper skins, 11 new rifles and 3 New secondaries all with new sounds and kit icons, and two sniper-only platoons. Check out the cool screenshots and full details at Hooker's and grab the 7Mb file at Raven's =DRAG=.

World Cyber Games Monday February 04 | Daywanderer
World Cyber Games is a relatively new, interesting, international, multi-game tournament running on its second year. On their main page is a voting system where you can decide which games will be played in upcoming tournaments. But aha, there's something wrong, isn't there? That's right, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon isn't on the list! We, the fans, can change that though - there is a 'Recommended' box where you can type in any title for any platform, so head over there and insure Ghost Recon's future in this intriguing new tourney!

Note: Before you can submit the recommended title, you have to vote for the games already on the list.

Skins Manager Monday February 04 | Rocky
Yesterday, Firestar submitted this little tool that lets you manage the skins that you download - great for activating skins now that modders are really getting the hang of uniform changing! As usual, make sure you read the documentation before using.
The download was updated today to correct an error, grab it here, and visit Firestar at Matrix.

Tom Clancy and Chat Monday February 04 | Rocky
Our Tom Clancy Confidential Competition is now closed. The winners, and correct answers are available here.

WhiteKnight has set up a Ghost Recon mIRC chat room for those of you who prefer realtime chat rather than forums! Find connection instructions here, and feedback or support in this discussion.

Africa Baby! *updated* Friday February 01 | Daywanderer
It's official - the Ghost Recon Mission Pack, that is. So far we've ascertained that the mission pack - named Ghost Recon: Desert Siege - will contain the following:
  • Eight new missions, based in East Africa.
  • New multiplayer-only maps, the only known names so far being Creek Bed and Wilderness.
  • A new multiplayer mode: Domination. Unreal Tournament players will be familiar with this one, where the goal is to gain control of various control zones scattered around the map. For every control zone a team has control of, they accrue a certain amount of points. The winning team is the one with the largest amount of points when the time limit expires.
  • A leader board, allowing you to see the "stats" (most likely kills, deaths, etc.) of other players during the game.
  • Improved player models.
  • New enemies.
  • New weapons.
  • A mysterious new vehicle. So far, the only information about it has been that it's not airborne and not moving (which rules out working helicopters), but it's still said to be "important". This screenshot shows a jeep - could it be? Speculate.

Head over to IGN for their preview if you subscribe to them. If not, the full preview has been posted at the official forums. There's also a link to some good IGN screenshots there, some even available to non-subscribers.

Update: The IGN preview is now available to the masses. If you haven't done so yet, go there now for some delicious mission pack info!

Desert Siege Friday February 01 | Rocky
Some new information about the mission pack has been revealed over at the official forums. As you can see by the title, the mission pack will be called "Ghost Recon - Desert Siege". The new plot sees the Ghosts heading for East Africa where they help the Eritreans fight off an Ethiopian invasion. There will be 8 new single player missions and also some new multiplayer maps, and a new multiplayer game called "Domination" that sounds cool. IGN have promised some movies soon, although you may have to subscribe to see them.

Ruin Uniform Mods Friday February 01 | Rocky
Ruin has completed two uniform mods, which are both now available for download. Black Sheep is a black wool uniform, check the images here, and download here. The other mod is a Syrian Army uniform, images here and download here!

Talking about uniforms, I noticed BajaBravo has been updating his site with some new images, check it out.
